Selim II was born #onthisday 28th May and died on 12-15 December 1574 A.D. he was remembered as the “The Drunkard” sarhos in turkish and even Sari Selim.
He was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 A.D. until his death in 1574 A.D.
Selim II was the son of the famous Suleiman the Magnificent and the Haseki Hurrem Sultan. He was not the first choice in line for the throne and it was not until the death of his older brother Mehmed from Small Pox that he was furthered as next in line, his half-brother Mustafa was strangled to death on the orders of his brother and finally Bayeziz his brother was killed in an effort to get between him and his father.
Upon the Acceding on the throne, Selim II was an intrigue and in fraternal dispute in 1566 A.D.
According to some references and sources, he was the first Sultan to tlek no interest in military matters and even left the power to his ministers “Vizers”, allowing him to pursue his true love, orgies and many alcoholic nights with his name as “Drunkard”.
