The Sicilian revolution of independence in 1848 A.D. took in a year of many revolutions and popular revolts. It commenced #onthisday 12th January 1848 A.D. it was one of the first of the revolutions to take place that year.
There were revolutions that took place before, on the island of Sicily during the start of 1800 A.D. against the Bourbon Rule which resulted in an independent state that lasted for 16 months. It was advanced for its time in liberal democratic terms.
This was an effective curtain-raiser at the end of the Bourbon kingdom of the two Sicilies which were started by Giuseppe Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousands in 1860 A.D. and then also the siege of Gaeta of 1860-61 A.D.
