John Balliol was born in the year of 1249 A.D.- 25th November 1314 A.D. he became king of Scotland on 17th November 1292-1296 A.D. Not much is known about his earlier life but after the death of Margaret, Maid of Norway, Balliol was chosen by a group of auditors as the new king of Scotland. Whilst Edward I of England tried to undermine and impose that Balliol to treat Scotland as a vassal state.

The Scots grew tired of him and had a council of twelve who ruled instead. The council which signed a treaty with France known as Auld Alliance.

This triggered Edward to invade Scotland which caused the wars of Scottish independence. however after their defeat in 1296 A.D. Balliol was abdicated and imprisoned in the tower of London.
