Giovanni was born at Caprino Veronese, Veneto. He was a mining specialist who developed a first class classification of geological time.. which was based on the study of Geology in northern Italy.

He divided the history of the earth into four different period such as: Primary, Secondary, tertiary and volcanic.

The ideas and scheme was put forward by Arduino in 1759 A.D. which was based on a study of the rocks in the Alps.
