#Onthisday in #history 1742 – Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, becomes British Prime Minister.
He was a British whig statesman, who served continuously in Government from the year 1715 until his death. Then from the year of 1742, he was prime minster until his death in 1743, on for a year.
Compton was seen as the second Prime minster after Sir Robert Walpole, even though he was largely a figurehead, the real people who exercised power was the Secretary of State known as “Lord Carteret”.
